On this tour, you will get the highlights of the history and culture of Reykjavík, Iceland’s beautiful capital. This three-hour long tour takes you to the most important places of Reykjavík, including the famous Hallgrímskirkja church, named after the 17th-century poet and clergyman Hallgrímur Pétursson. It is the highest church in Iceland at 74,5 metres high (244 ft.) and it took 41 years to build. Construction began in 1945 and didn’t end until 1986. It additionally houses the largest church organ in Iceland; it has 5275 pipes, is 15 metres high and weighs 25 tons. Other stops are, for example, Höfði, where the US President Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev President of the Soviet Union met to end the Cold War, and Bessastaðir, the official residence of the Icelandic president located at the beautiful Álftanes peninsula. Bessastaðir was first settled in the year 1000 and has since then been an important place in Iceland. Snorri Sturluson, the author of Snorra-Edda, lived there in the 13th century and later on it became a Royal Fortress and the residence of the Norse King’s highest ranking officers and officials living in Iceland. The tour ends at the beautiful Harpa concert hall and conference centre in downtown Reykjavík, which was designed by the Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects in co-operation with Danish-Icelandic artist Ólafur Elíasson. The guide will provide you with all the essential information regarding Reykjavík‘s rich culture, history and natural environment. This is the essential introduction to Iceland‘s capital!

Day 3: Golden Circle Tour

Highlights

  • Visit Þingvellir, the birthplace of Iceland’s age-old democracy
  • Hear hair-raising stories of Þingvellir’s grislier sites
  • Witness the hypnotic power of Gullfoss falls
  • Watch a large geyser erupt and see Geysir, the namesake of all geysers
  • Explore Skálholt archeological site

The Golden Circle is by far our most popular day trip, and for good reason! It’s packed with arguably the country’s most important sites and guided by some of our finest tour experts with extensive knowledge and experience of Iceland’s most revered sites.

A HARROWING HISTORY & FABULOUS FALLS: Our first stop is Þingvellir, the mainland’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is not only where the tectonic plates are pulling apart creating a rift valley, but also the birthplace of the Althing, the world’s longest-running democratic parliament since 930 AD. Here we’ll learn the chilling stories behind Drowning Pool, Gallows Rock, Burning Gorge and Sand Banks of Slaughter. Deep in the interior we’ll find Gullfoss as it cascades into narrow Hvítárgljúfur canyon. The geology of the massive falls means it’s nearly impossible to photograph completely—you simply have to see it with your own eyes.

BUBBLING WITH EXCITEMENT: At Geysir geothermal area we’ll see a geyser hurling boiling water up to 30 meters in the air every 3-7 minutes, so you’re sure to catch the thrilling moment. The entire area is alive with geothermal activity, including bubbling mudpots, steam vents and Geysir, the namesake of all geysers.

ENCOUNTERING HISTORY: After a short stop at Faxi waterfall and its fish ladder, which allows salmon to “climb” upstream, we reach the archeological museum under Skálholt church. Skálholt was the epicenter of culture, politics and learning in Iceland for over 700 years. Outside we’ll explore a replica turf house, Iceland’s heritage building style.

STORIES OF A LIFETIME: While any one of these stops makes incredible fodder for your Instagram feed, they also all have rich histories and fascinating tales, each told with their own nuances by our brilliant storyteller guides. It’s not just facts and figures that bring these places to life, but the compelling stories our guides have collected over time. Don’t just see the sites—experience Iceland through the eyes of a tour expert with Arago Travels.

Day 4: South Coast

With its enormous and ancient icebergs breaking off from Vatnajökull glacier, this natural wonder of Iceland is a sight you absolutely cannot miss.

The lagoon covers 18 square kilometres (7 square miles) and reaches more than 248 metres (814 ft) at its deepest point. You may recognize the lagoon from scenes in Batman Begins, Tomb Raider and two James Bond movies.

• Skógafoss
• Glacier lagoon – with opportunity of a boat tour among the icebergs
